  1. In preparation for the upcoming convention in week 6 (and in relation to my responsibilities as a sign maker for our constituency) I have conducted research into the various types of fonts and lettering used in 1850/60's America as well as analysing signage from that era to gain an understanding of how people conveyed messages during that period. I have also begun accquiring resources for the actual sign making process and have been in communication with my group partner to negotiate the division of the owrk load.

  2. As co-convener my job in preparation for the upcoming convention was to make sure that the tutorial group understood their deadlines for their specific tasks, and to organize amongst the other co-conveners as to which person would deal follow up with each deadline.

  4. As a writer I discussed with the other writers what our jobs would entail and was given a deadline for our 3-5 minute speeches by the convenors.

  5. My group and I identified the main points our tute group was going to argue, then divided these topics amongst us in order for us to individually focus on a particular point. We then discussed with the other groups upon a deadline in which our research must be completed and passed on to the writers. Our groups responsibility was to research and gather information on our tute’s given topic and then forward it on to the writers who were to use this information at the Convention.

  6. As a researcher, I have been focused on Prominent Fire Eaters and Confederate leaders. I have four it difficult to find any amount of great detail on the Fire Eaters, and their leaders, but have had more luck with other Confederates.

  7. As a writer I have undertaken to receive and understand the information provided by the research group to form the basis of the presenters' speeches. In our writers group we discussed possible topics we could each prepare, for an overall speech running 3 - 5 minutes.

  8. As I writer I have carefully looked over the provided research. I have tried to synthesize this into several key points that could form the basis of a speech. In focusing on 'States Rights' I have decided to frame a speech around the ideas of: the idea of state sovreignty as being fundamental to the constitution, and the propagandanistic idea that fighting to protect states rights is necessary for the validation of the Revolutionary War. Of considerable importance to my task was to closely analyse primary sources of speeches - so as to gain an understanding of the tone, rhetoric and persuasive techniques employed by Southern secessionists; and then try to emulate this in my own speech.

  9. As a writer my aim was to devise a speech which addressed the concerns of southern tradition as an eroding culture, largely defending the rights of the south while remaining eager in eradicating the thought of war. In employing strong southern rhetoric, I implied the north's continuous upper hand over their southern counterparts , suggesting a consideration for the south was in due, without losing pride in the slaveholding south. The representation of radical secessionist honour was a challenge especially due to their headstrong commitment to slavery without compromise. However, with sufficient original sources due to the contribution of the researchers, I was able to emulate the unique southern approach to the fire eater's manifesto.

  10. As a researcher my role was to investigate important documents and the way in which the radical secessionists used these sources to support their cause. I particularly considered the US constitution, Declaration of Independence and the Confederate Constitution. The South used these documents as supporting evidence for key arguments such as state "squatter sovereignty" and the property rights vested in slavery.

  11. As a presenter, there was not much for me to do before the convention, hence why I am writing this now. Once the researchers and writers had come up with information, my fellow presenters and I put together our speeches and made a Powerpoint presentation to accompany them.
